CREATE AN ART DECO BATHROOM SUITE

Opulent bathroom design that works in small bathrooms

You've decided to spruce up the bathroom and you want something absolutely fabulous that oozes style and history. But your bathroom is small - no surprises there. And collecting all original items to fit your bathroom could be extremely time consuming. So how to go about it?

XArt deco bathroomArt deco bathroomTo illustrate the possibilities for creating an eclectic Art Deco bathroom design in the 21st centry, Drummonds created the sumptious bathroom illustrated left. The look is based on bathroom suites of the 1920s and 1930s.

But we have to be honest: it's not a strict Art Deco room. Purists would probably turn up their noses. There are Art Deco elements but the design draws on all sorts of bathroom design ideas to create the opulent end result. But we thought - anything goes in bathroom design nowadays and the final effect is so stunning, and so redolent of early twentieth century design that the period license seemed worth it.

That this bathroom has been created with small bathrooms in mind is an added bonus.

Let's break the design down into steps:

Period effect

The very striking symmetrical configuration of the bath with its mirrored surround, large mirror above and lights on either side - set against the intense blue of the walls - is very art deco, as are the geometrical shapes, although none of these items are originals.

Original 1920s doors with original handlesBy contrast, the double doors, frame and door handles are authentic period pieces from the 1920s or a bit earlier. Together, these are enough to give the bathroom a powerful atmosphere of this opulent period. (The doors with handles are on sale from Drummonds architectural antiques department for £3470).

Complementary bathroom traditions

limestone and cabouchon flooringArt Deco mixed and matched styles from many places and periods. Drummonds too has mixed and matched. Underfoot is light, natural limestone and cabouchon flooring. Though reclaimed, these tiles are not typical of the early twentieth century - marble was the natural floor covering - but they complement the intense colours and stark lines of art deco beautifully.

Small bathroom design

Although this is a fair sized bathroom, items have been carefully chosen so that this style could be replicated in a smaller space.

The built in Lomond bath with square ends was designed for smaller bathrooms. It is available in two sizes: longer and narrower, and wider and shorter, so that the luxury cast iron bathing experience can be shoehorned into an available corner. The handmade mirrored surround also works well in contained spaces, suggesting extra depth.

heated towel railDrummonds classically styled heated towel rails are another space saver. Available with three to six bars, they enable large families to share small bathrooms without sacrificing style.

Inspiration

We hope that customers looking for Art Deco or period bathroom style and true opulence will take inspiration from this latest bathroom design
